Marjan

Marjan the one eyed lion
blinded by despair
Marjan the one eyed lion
filled with pain and prayer

a mighty beast
withered to the bone
blinded and bullied all his life
behind bars built of timber

a tired beast
each day a reminder
of the mother his mind
could no longer remember

but a flame lived in his throat
one last roar, a tribute
to those who were once his kin
hunted for their furs and skins

Marjan the one eyed lion
chin resting on graying paws
Marjan the one eyed lion
dreaming of Africa and the dead
